about

The short version

M. Howalt grew up in suburban Denmark, but writes stories that most often take place in a far-away, magical land or a nitty-gritty alternate reality. Armed with a master's degree in English studies, a head full of ideas, a pet cat (or feline overlord as he likes to think), this writer pens supernatural fiction with a literary twist and emotional realism.

The long version

I've been making up stories for as long as I can remember, but when I was 11 years old, the library in my hometown in suburban Denmark ran out of the kind of books I wanted to read, and I started writing my own stories down.

Over the years, the stories grew quite a lot more complex and some of them a whole lot longer, but it wasn't until I'd graduated Copenhagen University with a master's degree in English studies that I decided to pursue writing more seriously.

By now, I've had a number of flash fiction pieces published, most notably on Every Day Fiction. In 2014, I began serialising my novel Aconitum on JukePop Serials in weekly installments. After it ended in June 2015, I launched the novella Conviction which was completed in August 2015.

I am currently working on new serials; One called Focal Point and one called Blood, Sweat & Runes as well as a number of other projects including other stories set in the world of Conviction.

I like to describe my style as a mixture of genres. Most of what I write has an element of the fantastical - magic, supernatural creatures or the like, but above all, I strive to deliver relevant stories with universal subjects and emotional realism .

Besides being a writer, I am a freelance translator and I also teach English to adults at night school. I enjoy reading and am fond of a lot of different books, but I do have a penchant for supernatural, speculative and literary fiction. I also take a lot of photos of my cats and of urban and rural landscapes. Sometimes I draw in my spare time (and when I do, it's often characters from my stories). I enjoy listening to music and have a playlist that serves as the unofficial soundtrack for every story I write. When I want to unwind, I like to go for a walk, hang out at a cafe or play computer games with friends.
